Make a Reading Promise

Reading Promise Log

When Alice Ozma was in fourth grade, she and her father, Jim, made a promise to read aloud together for 100 nights in a row. They kept that promise and then continued to read together for a total of 3,218 successive days to establish what they later came to call “The Reading Streak.”

Alice Ozma’s memoir, The Reading Promise, is a warm and funny look at events that surrounded the reading streak and highlights the heart-warming relationship that Alice developed with her father during their eight years of shared reading.

As part of our 2012 Happenings events we are encouraging the entire community to participate in making a “Reading Promise.” The library will provide reading logs and book recommendations for readers and listeners of all ages. We hope that you will be inspired to experience the rewards of reading by starting your own reading streak. Make a promise to read to someone every day during the month of March. Pick someone to read to that you have contact with daily: a child, a spouse, a grandchild (don’t forget on the Web!), someone at a near-by nursing home, a friend or neighbor.

The library is hosting a reading party on Friday, March 16, and a Celebration of our Community of Readers on Friday, March 23, in recognition of our community’s commitment to reading.

To promote reading together, the library is partnering with the Literacy Council of the Legacy Center for Community Success.
