Absent voter ballots are available for all elections and provide voters with
a convenient method for casting a ballot when they are unable to attend the
polls on Election Day.
You may obtain an absent voter ballot if you meet at least one of the criteria
below and are registered to vote in Midland:
age 60 years old or older;
physically unable to attend the polls without
the assistance of another;
expecting to be out of town the entire time
polls are open on election day;
in jail awaiting arraignment or trial;
unable to attend the polls due to religious
appointed to work as an election inspector in a
precinct other than the precinct in which you reside.
How to Obtain an Absentee Ballot
The absentee voting process begins with a call (989-837-3310) or visit to the Midland City
Clerk’s Office (333 W. Ellsworth St., Midland, MI) to request an application for an absent
voter’s ballot. Applications for an absentee ballot by mail must be received by
2 p.m. on the Saturday BEFORE the election. After that date, the
City Clerk's Office cannot mail out absentee ballots.
Once the application has been completely filled out and returned to the City
Clerk’s Office, your request for an absentee ballot will be processed
Michigan law requires that absentee ballots be sent to your registered address unless you are hospitalized, institutionalized, or at an address outside of your community.
Filling Out and Signing Your Absentee Ballot
Once you have received your absentee ballot, vote the ballot and be sure to sign the envelope before it is returned to the City Clerk's Office.
Absentee ballots will not be counted unless your signature is on the return
envelope. If you received assistance
voting the ballot, information and the signature of the person
assisting you must also be completed on the return envelope.
If returning your ballot by mail,
please affix a 66-cent stamp to the return
envelope to ensure prompt delivery.
Returning Absentee Ballots
Only you, a family member or
person residing in your household, a mail carrier or an election official is
authorized to deliver your signed absent voter ballot to your Clerk’s Office.
You may NOT deliver voted absentee ballots for friends, neighbors or

Absentee ballots being returned on Election Day must be returned to the
Midland City Clerk’s Office.
If you choose to return your absentee ballot by mail,

Emergency Absent Voter Ballot
If an emergency - such as a sudden illness or family death - prevents you from reaching the polls on Election Day, you may request an emergency absent voter ballot. Requests for an emergency ballot must be submitted before 4 p.m. on Election Day. In order to be eligible for this special service, the emergency must have occurred AFTER 4 p.m. on the Monday prior to Election Day.
