Roll Call
Burhans called the meeting to order
at 7:00 p.m.
PRESENT: Melissa Barnard, Michael Burhans,
Lucille Cronin, Sarah Galt, Laura Peterson, Suzanne Phillips, Mary Ann Woodbury

Acceptance of August 17, 2011 Meeting Minutes
Motion to
accept minutes made by Galt, seconded by Cronin. Motion approved.

V.
Presentation on Library Databases
In addressing the Board goal
to increase awareness of the library, Barnard arranged for Ron Suszek,
Supervisor of Adult Services, to give a presentation. Suszek gave an overview of the library’s
databases.
VI.
Director’s Report
Barnard
announced that special promotional rental charges will be offered on DVDs
during November and December. This
promotion is intended to highlight the unique resources available in the
collection. Galt and Burhans
thought this was a great way to make patrons familiar with our unique selection
of DVDs.
Patrons are encouraged to participate in the Great Michigan Read featuring Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights, and Murder in the Jazz Age by Kevin Boyle. Copies of the books will be available for check out beginning in November.
The Battle of the Books Kick Off is Saturday, November 12th and features children’s author Shelley Pearsall. Fourth and fifth graders from the Midland area will be participating in this annual program.

Patron Comments and Suggestions
SIGNED COMMENTS:
1. Why is there not a drive up book deposit in the City of Midland? All of us Baby Boomers who have walking issues would love to have one.
Options have been explored but no
economical solution has been found.
2. The new fall flower plantings by the front door are lovely!
UNSIGNED COMMENTS:
1.
Very pleased to see the Criterion Collection
featured in the video area – many of these titles cannot be found in video
stores, making the library an even more important community resource!
Eleven comments were received regarding date stamping.
Four comments were received regarding ebooks for ereaders.

Old Business
a. Board/Community Communications
Phillips noted that the Friends October Book Sale
was a success. Burhans
relayed that he had received a positive comment about Circle Time storytime. Peterson
commented that the bookmarks and posters has been received at Midland Public
Schools to promote the Battle of the Books program and that students are
getting excited about it.
b. Mid-Michigan
Library Cooperative Report
Cronin
reported on the MMLC meeting which took place on 9/8/2011. The final report from the work plan of last
year and the 2011-12 budget were approved. An audit will be scheduled for the
budget. A report on the director’s
evaluation and the summer reading program was presented. The 2011-12 work plan
was also discussed.
c. Library Board 2011-12 Goals
Board members brainstormed
ideas to increase adult circulation statistics.

New Business
a. Library Board Workshop, Tuesday, November 1st,
5:30 p.m.
Workshop
will take place at Whiting Forest with a light dinner included.
