The meeting was called to order at 7:03 p.m. by Chairperson Bruce Peck.

 

Minutes

 

Motion by Dauer, seconded by Altimore to receive the minutes of the meeting of October 3, 2006.Motion carried.

 

Putnam Park

 

Ireland explained that the Downtown Development authority has asked to delay discussion on this topic to a later date.The DDA. is now looking at developing a more extensive plan for the downtown area which would include the area at the corner of Main and Cronkright.

 

The Commission agreed to delay discussion on this topic to a later date

 

Swimming Statistics

 

Ireland presented a report which showed that the number of recreational swimmers increased from 18,017 in 2005 to 23,552 in 2006 with corresponding revenue increased from $51,162.24 to $77, 592.62.This represents a 30% increase in swimmers and a 51% increase in revenue due to a fee increase in the adult rate.Ireland also reported that a preliminary look at expenses indicated a 29% increase

 

The Commission discussed the report.Commission agreed the swim season was a successful one. Good weather certainly helps and the new features were well used.

 

Project Update

 

Ireland reported the wireless access has been activated at the Civic Arena.There is coverage in the lobby area, the office area and throughout the Olympic Rink and the Mezzanine.The lobby access is for the convenience of customers and those waiting for skaters or parents and the rink access serves media and scoring needs for major events.

 

He also advised the Commission of the North American Cup Speedskating Championship which will bring several top skaters including Olympians to Midland, November 11 & 12.

 

Ireland also reported that the Department is working with the DDA on a project to construct an artificial ice skating surface at the Farmerís Market.It is intended to open after the Santa Parade on Saturday, November 18th.

 

It is exclusively for recreational skating.†† Itís a plexiglass type surface.

Rothhaar questioned timing of the January 2nd meeting.Kelly recommended to move to January 9th and asked staff to research if feasible.
