REGULAR MEETING OF JUNE 3, 2008

Meeting called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chairperson John Rothhaar

Minutes of May 6, 2008

 

Jurado motioned, Dauer seconded to receive minutes of the meeting of May 6, 2008. Motion passed 7-0.

 

Call to Audience

None.

 

Update on Olympic Game

 

Post spoke about the upcoming June 21st Olympic game and discussed the game schedule. The response for the donated tickets was overwhelming and tickets were quickly distributed to people in person and online. They have all been distributed as of Thursday, May 22nd.

 

Update on Tournaments

 

Post reported the Memorial Day Softball tournament went well. Ten teams signed up for the D/E Division but the B/C Division was cancelled due to lack of team registrations.

 

Old Business

 

Rothhaar would like a report on the Golf Course from Brett Ireland. Since we are in the middle of golf season he wants to see how things are looking.

·         Past sales vs. last year

·         Condition of course

·         Use of greens fees

·         Are changes working effectively to get items done?

·         Are there things we can do differently?

 

July meeting attendance questioned. Determination was to skip July meeting and hold next meeting August 5, 2008.

 

Martin asked Altimore if the golf committee meets Thursday.  Altimore will forward minutes to Martin.

 

 

 

New Business

 

Howard Garrett of the Beautification Advisory Committee reported on Advisory Committee. Explained the different awards that are given: 1) Residential 2) Non-Residential, 2 categories under each 1) Regular Landscaping 2) Structural Site Improvements

 

Public Nominations – Encourage public participation, there are 9 committee members who are assigned to 9 areas in the City to make sure every nomination is looked at.

 

Special Award:  Betty R. Toller – Civic Communication Award. Criteria - Magnitude of project, visibility to general public, degree of public participation, aesthetics.

 

Midland is more visitor-friendly with the new signs, recreational events and preservation of trees in natural areas. Attracts tourism, enhances resident’s quality of life.

 

Garrett handed nomination forms to council members. Rothhaar questioned application deadline.  Garrett stated August 1, 2008 deadline for applications, typically 70-80 applications with 25-30 winners.

 

Jurado – asked where applications available – Garrett said applications are online at the City website or DPS department. Garret believes applications available at City Hall and Grace A. Dow Memorial Library. Jan Yuergens of DPS is one of the committee representatives. Turn completed forms into DPS or City Hall.

 

Motioned and seconded to adjourn the meeting. Motion passed 7– 0.
