The
Midland Fire Department hosts an annual open house on the Saturday of Fire
Prevention Week. Each year, Fire Prevention Week is celebrated in the week
during which the October 9th falls. (October 9th is the
date of the Great Chicago Fire that occurred in 1871.)
Schools
or groups of up to 50 people at a time may schedule a tour of the Fire
Department by calling the department’s administrative office at 989-837-3410.
Tours are generally hosted at Fire Station 1 on
If
you have a child interested in viewing one of the department’s fire trucks, it
is recommended that you call ahead to schedule a visit.
To Youth: Firefighting crews conduct educational
programs in Midland Public Schools by appointment. Students learn basic fire safety
tips such as stop, drop and roll and E.D.I.T.H. (Exit Drills in the Home) techniques. They
also learn that matches are dangerous and shouldn’t be played with. Firefighters
will display their personal protective gear and give tours of a fire
truck.

Youth
counseling services are offered through a program called Fire Starters, and
referrals for additional counseling may be made on a case-by-case basis.
To Other Groups: Educational
programs for groups are geared more toward fire extinguisher training and the
importance of smoke detectors. Q&A sessions also take place during these
educational training sessions.
