Meet Max!
 The name of the latest addition to the Midland Fire Department is Max,
an animatronics puppet acquired in the fall of 2006 by the Midland Fire Department.
Max, which was purchased for $5,000, is
a great new way to reach youth with the department's fire safety message.
Max was purchased with money left over from a FEMA grant that
was used for exercise equipment.
For many years, a key fire safety education component of the fire department was the Smoke House,
which taught kids how to properly escape a home house fire.
While the smoke house had been a great educational opportunity,
it is no longer in use because it was over 10 years old and in need of some costly maintenance updates.
Max is very portable and draws attention
wherever he goes. He moves with a remote control operated by
firefighters, who also wear a headset and earpiece to serve as
Max's "voice". Max can talk and respond to questions, offering a
fun and interactive program for teaching fire safety.
