Although not required under the 2003 Michigan
Residential Code, home sprinkler systems provide an additional level of
fire protection.

Fire Extinguishers
There are different types of extinguishers; however, the ABC-rated fire
extinguisher is recommended for the homeowner. A minimum of one (1) fire
extinguisher is recommended for each level of the home. The extinguishers should be checked/tested annually, at a minimum. The
extinguishers should be placed in an area easily accessible and familiar
to the whole family and/or caregiver(s). We recommend you read the
operating instructions before installing an extinguisher.
Most retail, department and hardware stores carry fire extinguishers
for home use. If you have a business, you should contact the Midland
Fire Department Fire Marshal for further instructions, at 989-837-3410.
Local hardware stores and extinguisher companies can check/test fire
extinguishers. The manufacturer’s recommendation for testing should be
followed.
The basic steps for operating a home fire extinguisher can be
remembered with a simple acronym
– P.A.S.S, or Pull Aim Squeeze Sweep.
Pull the operating pin from the extinguisher handle.
Aim the extinguisher at the base of the fire.
Squeeze the handle.
Sweep the fire again at the base.
After an extinguisher has been discharged, dispose of the
extinguisher in your waste container.
If you have additional questions about extinguisher maintenance, contact the Midland Fire Department for more information.
