Human Resources Department
Application and Hiring Process - How to Apply for a Job
An official City of Midland application form must be submitted to be
considered for each job opening. Resumes alone are not sufficient to apply for employment.
Make sure to submit the correct application for
a given position. On this website, links to downloadable applications for each position will be
included on the
Current Job Openings web page.
For certain jobs, copies of certifications and/or licenses will be required in
addition to an application form, as detailed in the job posting.
Application forms and any required certifications must be filled out
accurately and completely, signed and dated, and returned to the City of Midland
by the job posting deadline. Applications may be submitted
in person, mailed, or faxed to the Human Resources Department at Midland City Hall (see below).

After Applications Are Received
Once a job application deadline has passed, application forms and any
accompanying documentation will be reviewed. Candidates that meet the
qualifications for the position will be invited for an employment test. All
applicants will typically be notified of their status within fifteen (15)
working days of the job posting deadline.
Depending on the duties and responsibilities of a given position, background
and driving record checks will be conducted.
Job Testing
Employment tests can be interviews and/or written and practical tests.
Candidates will be notified as to what type(s) of employment test(s) will be
administered.
Once employment testing has been completed, a list of names ranked from
highest to lowest score will be established. The highest ranking candidates will
be invited for an interview with the appointing department.
A list of candidates for each job opening will be kept on file for one to two years.
The list will be
referenced if there is an opening for that same job within the one-to-two-year
time period.
Open Competitive and Promotional Job Openings
Many City positions are open to City employees (promotional) before they are
advertised to the public (open competitive). Typically, when there are not
enough internal, promotional applicants, a job posting is advertised to the
public as an open competitive position.
Employment Offers
Employment offers are made by the appointing department and/or City Manager.
All employment offers are contingent upon the job
candidate successfully passing a pre-employment
physical and a background check.
Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing is also required for public safety
(police and fire) and driver positions requiring a Commercial Driver’s License
(CDL). CDL driving positions also require random drug and alcohol testing during
employment.
The City of Midland offers competitive wages as outlined in each job posting
and competitive
fringe benefits that reflect Midland area employers.
Wages and Benefits
Human Resources Department staff can assist in answering any questions about
wages and
benefits. If interested in this information, call 989-837-3357.
