Water Pressure Boosted in City's Northeast Section
In the summer of 2004, the City completed a $2.9 million water
system improvement project designed to increase water pressure in
the northeast section of Midland. The northeast district extends
north of a line from Waldo and E. Ashman Street to Swede to Wheeler
to Jefferson to U.S. 10 to Sturgeon north to the city limits (see
map of area above).
Almost 3.5 miles of water main was installed over a two-year
period, adding to existing 16-inch mains in the district. The new
mains, plus a new nine million-gallon-a-day pump station at the
Midland Water Treatment Plant and new pressure control valves, have
increased the water pressure in this part of the city from a low of
35 pounds per square inch (psi) to as much as 60 psi.
Before the improvements were made, the northeast area - which
has the highest elevation in the city - had comparatively low water
pressure. Since the project was completed, homes and businesses in
that section of the city have seen a noticeable improvement in their
water pressure.
The changes put water pressure in the northeast area in line
with other sections of the city.
The system enhancements also provide the capacity for future
residential and commercial growth, particularly in the area north of
U.S. 10 from Waldo Avenue to Eastman Avenue.
