Battle of the Books |
What is the Battle of the Books?
Battle of the Books is a program designed to encourage and reward fourth and fifth grade readers. The list of twenty books chosen by librarians encompasses a variety of interests and is designed to introduce students to a wide range of literature. During Battle season (November - March), students have the opportunity to meet with their teammates to discuss the books, so that reading becomes a shared activity. While reaping the rewards of reading and team building, the students also discover that they are having a lot of FUN!
Who may participate?
All fourth and fifth grade students in the area served by Grace A. Dow Memorial Library are eligible to participate in Battle of the Books.
What does the adult team manager do?
The adult team manager is the contact between the team and the library. The adult team manager is responsible for returning the registration form to the Youth Services Department, keeping the team members motivated, encouraging them to read from the list, arranging team transportation to and from the library on the Battle days, and providing help with running the Battles. The team manager should inform the Youth Services Department in case of a change in team members before the deadline for team registration. A team manager may manage only one team.
