Magazine Collection
Back issues of magazines in the Youth Services Department check out for 14 days. The current copy, in the display folder, does not check out, but may be looked at in the library or photocopied. There are several magazines of special interest to childcare professionals, including:
Early Childhood Today Pack O’Fun
Family Fun Science and Children
The Mailbox Teacher Sesame Street Parents
Holiday Collection
Picture books and non-fiction books on Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas are kept in the store room near the Youth Services Desk. Books are out on display about a month prior to their holiday, but books may be checked out year-round. If the books you are looking for are not yet on display, ask a librarian to pull titles for you (or if you aren’t accompanied by children, you may browse the collection yourself). Holiday books check out for 14 days and are not renewable regardless of the time of year. The Vertical File also contains files for each of the holidays.
Professional Reference Shelf
The librarians keep professional tools in the Reference Collection, behind the Youth Services Desk or in the store room. While this material does not check out, you may ask to look at them in the library and make photocopies if needed. The current edition of A to Zoo: Subject Access to Children’s Picture Books is available at the desk, as well as issues of Kidstuff, are two examples of the types of material you’ll find here. Professional journals such as School Library Journal are also kept here.
Other Hints
When looking for non-fiction books, look for the red mark at the top of the spine. This indicates our easiest books we have in that subject area. Our oversized non-fiction books are located on the bottom shelf in that same call number area. These books are often helpful when working with groups of children because of their larger illustrations or photographs.
