MIDLAND BOARD OF REVIEW CONSIDERS

HOMESTEAD AFFIDAVITS AND POVERTY EXEMPTION APPLICATIONS

The Midland Board of Review will consider homestead affidavits and poverty exemption applications at their meeting scheduled for December 11, 2001.

The passage of Public Act 74 of 1995 gives authority to local Boards of Review to consider 2001 poverty exemption applications that were not previously considered at the March 2001 Board of Review.

To be considered for poverty exemption, candidates must complete a poverty exemption application and return it to the City Assessor’s office by 5 p.m. Monday, December 10, 2001.  Poverty exemption is determined based on income and asset levels.  For qualified applicants, the Board may grant a percentage exemption from the payment of property taxes based on circumstances.

Additionally, property owners who owned and occupied a property as their principal residence by May 1, 2000, and/or 2001, but did not file an “Affidavit for Homestead Exemption From Some School Property Taxes,” for 2000 and/or 2001 may do so at the City Assessor’s office by 5 p.m., Monday, December 10, 2001. A qualifying homestead affidavit entitles the property to receive the lower homestead property tax millage.  Property owners can verify a homestead credit by referring to the “percentage homestead declared” listed on their December tax bill.

For further information on homestead exemptions or poverty exemption qualifications, contact the City Assessor’s office at 837-3334. Homestead Affidavits and poverty exemption applications are available through the City Assessor’s office located in Midland City Hall, 333 West Ellsworth.
