CITY ADOPTS
STATE BUILDING, PLUMBING AND MECHANICAL CODES

Beginning July 31, builders, plumbers and mechanical workers will reference the State of Michigan Building Code for work done within the City of Midland.

Midland City Council adopted the Michigan Building, Mechanical and Plumbing Codes as the local code enforcement at their regular meeting of Monday, July 23.  Enforcement of the State Construction Code in the City of Midland begins Tuesday, July 31, 2001.

“Having a consistent construction code referenced throughout the State provides members of the construction industry a standard code to work under and makes their jobs a little easier,” said City of Midland Chief Building Official Dennis Wolf noting that his department has sought to familiarize local builders with the impending code changes during the past year and partnered with the Home Builders Association to sponsor a training session in May that acquainted area contractors with elements of the new State Construction Code.

The adoption of the new State Construction Code does not change the inspection and enforcement services provided by the City of Midland Building Department, however, the city will no longer be able to make local amendments to the code.

In Feb. 2000, Midland City Council adopted a resolution declaring the intent of the City to administer and enforce State codes.  The city adopted the Michigan Electrical Code in March 2000.
