The Midland Police Department, in conjunction with law enforcement agencies across the country, will help keep Midland residents safe by participating in the national “Click It or Ticket” safety belt campaign over the Memorial Day weekend.
The campaign is designed to encourage drivers and passengers to use their seat belts, and to properly restrain children under the age of four. In an effort to encourage the use of safety belts, the police department will adopt a zero tolerance approach when encountering adults and children who are not properly restrained when traveling this holiday. Motorists in violation of the law will receive a traffic ticket.
In 2000, a new Michigan law went into effect that strengthened the state’s safety belt law and allows police officers to stop a vehicle if they observe the driver or front seat passenger not wearing a seat belt, or, not properly restraining a child.
