BE THE FIRST TO
GOLF THE NEW CURRIE WEST ADDITION

The new nine-hole addition at Currie West Municipal Golf Course will open, weather permitting, on Friday, August 24 and you can be the first to golf it!

Golfers are invited to sign up at the Currie East Clubhouse through 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19 for a drawing to select the first four tee times on the new Currie West addition. The drawing will be held at the Currie East Golf Course at noon on Monday, Aug. 20. Participants will be asked to list the names of their four-person golfing team upon registering for the drawing. Teams selected in the drawing will be given the choice of purchasing nine- or 18-hole golf rounds.

Remaining tee times for the 24th will be available by calling the Currie East Clubhouse, 839-9600, beginning 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21.

Because of work on the Currie West original nine-hole course renovation, all regulation rounds of golf will be played from Currie East Clubhouse while Par 3 and driving range play will take place on Currie West beginning Aug. 24.

Currie West course fees are $9.50 for nine holes and $17 for 18-holes.  For seniors, 60 years and older, and juniors, 18 and younger, the costs are $6.50 for nine holes and $11.25 for 18-holes.

The city is in the midst of a $2.8 million enhancement to Currie West Municipal Golf Course that includes the recently completed construction of a new nine-hole course and the upcoming renovation of the existing nine-hole course.  The renovation of the existing nine-hole course began earlier this summer. The completed 18-hole course at Currie West is expected to open in Summer 2002.

This renovation and expansion project has been possible through generous donations from The Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation, The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation and The Charles J. Strosacker Foundation.

In addition, a new $1.2 million 4,000 square foot club house with a 40 x 60 foot picnic shelter will be completed in time for the 2002 golf season.  This project is generously funded by the Currie Family.  The new clubhouse facility is being designed by Dow Howell Gilmore and constructed by Majestic Construction of Caro, Michigan.

When the entire project is complete, the Currie Municipal Golf Course Complex will include two 18-hole courses plus a nine-hole par three course.  The design firm of Matthews and Associates (M&A) of Lansing, Mich., has been the architect and designer of this project that began in 1999.  Golf Digest has recognized M&A for their outstanding work on a number of Michigan courses including Grand Haven Golf Club, Elk Ridge in Atlanta and Timber Ridge in East Lansing.

For more than 40 years, the Currie Municipal Golf Course has operated as an enterprise fund by the City of Midland and supports itself through player fees.
