Speeding in residential neighborhoods represents the single greatest complaint issued to police departments and city council representatives throughout the United States.
In an effort to make Midland’s neighborhoods safer, the Midland Police Department Traffic Safety Team will emphasize the need for safe driving in neighborhoods from October 29 – Nov. 12.
During this time period officers will be working in teams to enforce traffic laws on Midland’s secondary roads. Neighborhoods where complaints have been made will be targeted as well as other neighborhoods assigned at random.
If you would like this effort to include your neighborhood contact the Midland Police Department shift supervisor at 839-4713.
Following are some reminders on neighborhood driving for motorists and residents:
Tips for Motorists
· Slow down and obey all traffic laws and speed limits. Leave early for your destination so you do not have to rush.
· Be alert. Watch for children walking in the street, especially where there are no sidewalks. Watch for children playing and gathering near bus stops. Watch for children arriving late for the bus, who may dart into the street without looking for traffic. When backing out of a driveway or leaving a garage, watch for children walking or biking to school. Halloween is next week, be especially watchful for children that night.
· Speeding extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle. At night when you can see only as far as your headlights the situation worsens.
· Make a difference. Slow down. Make sure you observe the 25-mile per hour speed limit.
Tips for Residents
· Remember most speeders in your neighborhood live in your neighborhood. Do your part and slow down.
· Talk with neighbors about your concern for the safety of all neighborhood children and pedestrians.
· Report problem areas to the police department.
The Midland Police Department thanks you for your support and asks that you please drive safely.
