The
Midland Police Department Traffic Safety Team will focus on the problem of
“Quick Left Turns” and “Improper Lane Use” through April 22 as part
of its monthly Safe Driving campaign.
At
signaled intersections, a driver intending to make a left turn must allow
opposing vehicles going straight through the intersection to proceed before
completing the left turn. Making that
quick left turn in front of oncoming traffic is dangerous and can result in
accidents. It is also considered a civil
infraction.
In
addition, the center turn lanes are for turning left or for getting into
position to make a left turn. Drivers
who use this turn lane for merging and traveling along the roadway to avoid traffic
congestion can cause serious accidents.
Drivers who violate this law can receive a civil infraction citation for
improper lane use.
Remember
it is the responsibility of all drivers and pedestrians to observe all traffic
laws. It is also the daily mission of
the Midland Police Department to ensure the safe movement of traffic and to
reduce traffic crashes. Together we make
the difference.
