Street reconstruction to reduce the width of George St. in front of the Midland Community Center begins today and will close George St. from State St. to Jefferson Ave. through mid-July.
Traffic will be detoured via State Street, North Street, Haley Street and Jefferson Ave.
The width of George St. in
front of the Midland Community Center will be reduced from 36 feet wide to 22
feet, reducing the crosswalk from the Center’s parking lot by 40% and causing
traffic to slow for the crosswalk area.
To improve safety for the
pedestrian crossing, the City of Midland Engineering Department constructed
temporary traffic-calming measures last fall to allow for traffic monitoring
and effectiveness of the street narrowing.
Feedback from motorists, pedestrians and the Midland Community Center
has been supportive of the street narrowing.
