NEW JACK BARSTOW AIRPORT TERMINAL CONSTRUCTION
PROJECT TAKES OFF TUESDAY WITH GROUNDBREAKING
CEREMONY
Midland is about to land a wonderful new addition to its landscape – a new
2,100-square-foot terminal at the Jack Barstow Airport. To celebrate, the City of Midland will host a groundbreaking ceremony at the
airport on Tuesday, August 24 at 11:30 a.m.
Construction
of the new structure, which will be built by Gerace
Construction Company, Inc., is slated to begin by the end of August. The
project is expected to be completed by spring 2005. The current 54-year-old
terminal building, which is located at the end of Barstow Drive, will be demolished prior to the new
building’s opening.
The
exterior of the new terminal will feature a metal roof with precast
concrete panels in a design that imitates the architectural style of Midland’s celebrated architect, Alden B. Dow. A
vaulted ceiling and skylight are highlights of the building’s fresh design, and
the terminal will also feature a pilot rest area, lobby, meeting room,
attendant’s office and weather room.
The new
building project is being funded by various private and public sources at a
cost of approximately $475,000. The City has budgeted $40,000 from the proceeds
of a hangar sale at the airport to help fund the project.
Jack Barstow Airport is located in the northwest area of Midland adjacent to the Midland County Fairgrounds and the City Forest. The airfield encompasses over 500 acres and serves
the needs of 70 based pilots. The airport has two runways to accommodate
various wind conditions in flight and various sizes of small aircraft. The
airport handles about 25,000 operations (take offs and landings) per year.
