CITY SMOKE TESTING OF SANITARY SEWER SYSTEM
CONTINUES IN MIDLAND

Beginning Wednesday, October 27, City of Midland wastewater crews will conduct smoke testing of sanitary sewers in an area bounded by Eastlawn Drive, Wheeler Street, Saginaw Road and Swede Avenue. The smoke testing will help locate any sewer line breaks or defects and also identify locations where storm water unnecessarily enters the sanitary sewer system.

Residents will receive a notification on their door letting them know when crews will be smoke testing in their neighborhood. During smoke testing, neighborhoods might notice smoke coming from eaves, yard drains and catch basins. The smoke is non-toxic, non-staining and harmless to people, plants and animals. There is no fire hazard associated with the smoke testing.

On rare occasions, the smoke may enter the house through faulty drains or improper traps. The existence of smoke might mean that sewer gas could enter a home. Residents are encouraged to contact 911 if smoke is noticed in the home. If the smoke is a result of the testing, a wastewater crew member may visit your home to help identify where and why the smoke has entered your home.

Smoke testing in this area of the city is expected to be completed by Friday, November 5.
