EMERGENCY WARNING SIRENS TO BE TESTED

If Midland County citizens hear a periodic growl coming from the outdoors on Monday, October 30, it won’t be from goblins preparing for Halloween.

The growling sound, which could last for a few seconds at a time, will emanate from any one of 27 outdoor warning sirens located throughout the county that will undergo routine maintenance and testing operations on Monday. A second test is also planned for later in the work week.

The sirens are used as a warning mechanism for tornados and chemical releases that could affect public health and safety.

The Midland Fire Department will coordinate testing on 13 outdoor warning sirens located within the city of Midland, and the Midland County Office of Emergency Management will coordinate activities on 14 sirens located throughout the remainder of the county.

Sirens undergo this type of testing and maintenance twice each year. Regularly scheduled tests of emergency sirens also take place the first Saturday of each month at 12:45 p.m.

Any time citizens hear the warning sirens, they are encouraged to call 1-888-TELL-MORE for information on a possible emergency event and its potential effect on the community. Citizens may also tune in to WMPX AM 1490 or WMRX FM 97.7 to receive emergency information.

For more information on routine maintenance operations on the sirens, contact the Midland County Office of Emergency Management at 989-832-6750, or the Midland Fire Department at 989-837-3410.
