AT MIDLAND’S PUBLIC LIBRARY
September 21, 2007 – Together with the Michigan Humanities
Council, the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library will celebrate this year's Great
Michigan Read program by featuring The Nick Adams Stories by Ernest Hemingway.
Several programs are planned, including the
following:
·
Mark
your calendar for Thursday, Sept. 27 at 7
p.m. for a screening of the new documentary, Ernest
Hemingway: Life in Michigan in the
Library Auditorium. Immediately
following the film, WCMU Staff Producer Sarah Adams will speak about capturing
Hemingway’s Michigan
experience on film.
·
Be sure
to catch the showing of Richard Beymer’s portrayal of
Nick Adams in the film classic Adventures of a Young Man, set to play on
the big screen on Friday, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Library
Auditorium.
·
Don’t
miss Midland’s own Mike Federspiel, president of the
Michigan Hemingway Society, who is scheduled to give a presentation on Hemingway
at the Whiting Forest on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. Federspiel’s presentation, Picturing Hemingway's
Michigan, incorporates Hemingway family photos from 1898-1921 that
highlight the author’s time in Michigan. Hemingway-inspired hors d'oeuvres will be
served during the event.
·
Students
in grades 6-12 are invited to join in the Great Michigan Read by enjoying a
fictionalized account of a summer Ernest Hemingway spent in Michigan. The Pathless Woods: Ernest Hemingway's Sixteenth Summer in
Northern Michigan, by Gloria Whelan, is available at the library’s Teen
Spot, in the lower level of the library.
A quiz sheet about the book is also available in the Teen Spot.
Completed quizzes must be turned in by October 18 for a prize.
