EMERALD ASH BORER
SPOTTED IN CITY OF MIDLAND
June 25, 2008 – The City of Midland Parks and Recreation Department would like to inform the public that the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) insect has been identified in the city of Midland. The insect was previously spotted in locations throughout Midland County; however, this is the first confirmed sighting of the insect in the city.
On June 19, adult beetles were collected and photographed at a site within the city limits. The site is near an expressway and camping facilities, both of which are common infestation areas for the EAB. Ash trees in the area had been declining for three years previous to discovery; however, this is the first year that the characteristic D-shape exit holes and adult beetles have been positively identified.
The insect was identified by a local tree care professional, and officials from Dow Gardens and the Midland Parks and Recreation Department confirmed the sighting.
The Parks and Recreation Department will monitor the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer and will remove City-owned ash trees as necessary. Should residents want to treat trees on their property that are suspected of carrying the insect, the Parks and Recreation Department recommends contacting a local tree care professional.
