REDUCED FLOOD
INSURANCE RATES AVAILABLE
DUE TO CITY OF
MIDLAND PROGRAM
March 16, 2010 – In
recognition of National Flood Safety Awareness Week (March 15-19), the City of
Midland reminds Midland property owners and renters that they are eligible for a
reduced rate on flood insurance due to the City’s involvement in the National
Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) Community Rating System.
Since the 1980s, the City has participated in the
NFIP, a federal program that enables property owners in participating
communities to purchase insurance protection against losses
from flooding. Flood insurance provides
an alternative to other disaster assistance to meet the escalating costs of
repairing flood damage to buildings and their contents.
It is advisable to purchase flood insurance, as most
homeowners’ insurance policies do not cover flood damage.
Midland has achieved one of the state’s highest NFIP
ratings by sharing public information on flooding and flood management
activities, plus providing flood mapping for the city. This information, plus tips on how to stay
safe during floods, can be found on the City’s website, at www.midland-mi.org. Under the Services header, click on Planning /
Community Development to access the department’s home page. Links to flood information and maps are
posted on the page.
