CELEBRATE NATIONAL AWARD AS KID-FRIENDLY COMMUNITY ON JANUARY 29

January 21, 2011 The public is invited to the Midland Mall on Saturday, January 29 for a fun-filled celebration of Midland’s recent designation as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People in America.

The 100 Best event starts at 11:00 a.m. at the Mall’s main stage, with local dignitaries accepting Midland’s national award from the America's Promise Alliance, followed by the crazy antics of local, kid-oriented entertainer, Dr. Slime.

This free event is a celebration of Greater Midland’s recent national recognition as one of the top 100 places for youth in the nation.  The prestigious award was presented to Greater Midland – comprising all of Midland County – in September 2010 by America’s Promise, a Washington, D.C.-based consortium of leaders from all walks of life who work to ensure children have the resources necessary to grow into happy, healthy adults.

Representatives from 20+ local agencies spent countless hours on a comprehensive application to receive this national designation.  Greater Midland, which also won in 2007 and 2008, was recognized for the community’s youth-centered collaborations. The community demonstrates a commitment to every child from infant to college-age through its many long-standing efforts.

“Through countless innovative and far-reaching programs, Greater Midland works hard to ensure that our young people graduate and lead healthy, productive lives,” said Midland Mayor Maureen Donker. “We take great pride in building our children into strong, well-adjusted adults who will be equipped to take our region, state, and nation into the future.”

The 100 Best celebration is being held in conjunction with Kids’ Day, a free community event featuring entertainment and hands-on activities for children of all ages.
