CELEBRATE NATIONAL AWARD AS KID-FRIENDLY COMMUNITY ON
JANUARY 28
January 20, 2012 –
The public is invited to the Midland Mall
on Saturday, January 28 for a fun-filled celebration of Midland’s recent
designation as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People in America.
The
100 Best event
will be held in conjunction with Kids’ Day, a free community event featuring
entertainment and hands-on activities for children of all ages.
The 100 Best celebration
starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Mall’s main stage, with local dignitaries accepting
Midland’s national award from the America’s Promise Alliance, followed by the
crazy antics of local, kid-oriented entertainer, Dr. Slime.
This
free event is a celebration of Greater Midland’s national recognition as one of
the top 100 places for youth in the nation.
The prestigious award was presented to Greater Midland – comprised of
all of Midland County – in October 2011 by America’s Promise, a Washington,
D.C.-based consortium of leaders from all walks of life who work to ensure
children have the resources necessary to grow into happy, healthy adults. Greater Midland – which also won in 2007, 2008, and 2010 –
was recognized for the community’s commitment to children through its many
long-standing programs, services, and collaborations.
“Countless innovative and far-reaching programs helps Greater
Midland ensure that our young people graduate and lead healthy, productive
lives,” said Midland Mayor Maureen Donker. “Midland
is proud of the fact that we make our young people a top priority. We are
working to make sure they stay in school and have all the resources necessary
to become strong,
well-adjusted adults.”
A
$2,500 grant from America’s Promise as well as a $1,000 donation from The Dow
Chemical Company will fund the 100 Best
celebration and the purchase of several computers for
Windover High School, a Midland County school offering alternative learning opportunities
for teens.
